April 2023
Dear POS Community,
As we head toward the end of the school year, we want to remind you that our commitment to keeping our students safe remains a top priority. This month, we want to focus on active shooter situations in K-12 schools and the prevention tactics and management strategies that can help keep our students safe.
Why Students Need to Feel Safe from Active Shooters at K-12 Schools
Active Shooter Situations in K-12 Schools:
- Unfortunately, active shooter situations have become a reality in our schools, and preparing for such an event is essential. Active shooters are unpredictable, and there is no foolproof way to prevent such an event from occurring. However, there are things we can do to reduce the risk and minimize the impact of an active shooter situation.
Prevention Tactics:
Active Shooter Preparedness: Safeguarding Students and Schools
Identify and Report Concerns:
- If you notice something concerning, it is essential to report it immediately to the school administration or law enforcement. Signs to watch out for include threats of violence, possession of weapons, and concerning social media posts.
Implement Active Shooter Drills:
- Regular active shooter drills should be conducted to help students and staff understand what to do in an emergency. This will help to increase familiarity with safety procedures, decrease panic and increase the likelihood of survival.
Secure Access Points:
- Ensure that access to the school grounds is restricted to authorized personnel only. This can be done by implementing access control measures such as locking doors, installing security cameras, and employing security personnel.
Management Strategies:
Communication:
- Establishing clear communication channels to disseminate information during an active shooter event is essential. This can include implementing a school-wide alert system, establishing communication with law enforcement, and notifying parents and guardians.
Lockdown Procedures:
- The school should have clear and concise lockdown procedures in place that can be activated in the event of an active shooter. This includes lockdown drills that ensure all students and staff know how to respond quickly and effectively.
Law Enforcement Coordination:
- The school should coordinate with local law enforcement to ensure a swift response in the event of an active shooter. This can include providing them with access to the school’s floor plans and emergency contact information.
The Psychological Impacts of Active Shooter Drills and the Importance of Prevention
We hope that you find this information helpful and that it serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant when it comes to the safety of our students.
Sincerely,
